Pedestrian gates are typically 750-900mm wide. Side access gates (for bins and wheelbarrows) should be 1000mm or wider. For wheelchair access, Approved Document M (Vol 1) sets a minimum 850mm clear opening on an accessible approach; a 1000mm gate (≈950mm clear after hardware) gives a comfortable margin. Double gates for vehicles need 2400mm or more.
Use 2 heavy-duty T-hinges for standard gates up to 1500mm tall. Use 3 hinges for taller or heavier gates. Galvanised steel hinges resist rust. Weld-on hinges are used for metal gates.
Gate posts should be set at least 600mm deep in concrete for gates up to 1500mm tall. For taller or heavier gates, set posts 750mm deep. Use postcrete (rapid-set concrete) for a quick job.
Generally no, provided the gate is under 1 metre high next to a highway or 2 metres elsewhere. Gates in conservation areas or on listed buildings may need permission. Check with your local council if unsure.
