Terms of Use
Last updated:
These terms govern your use of gardencalcs.uk (the “site”). By using the site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.
1. What the site provides
The site is a free library of gardening and landscaping calculators plus reference content — covering soil and compost volumes, plant and seed spacing, lawn and turf areas, fertiliser and feed rates, paving and decking, fencing, watering and growing. It is provided “as is” without account registration or payment.
2. Accuracy and your own measurements
Calculators are estimates based on standard horticultural practice, typical product coverage rates, and the dimensions and figures you enter. Real-world results depend on your soil type and condition, the specific products and plants you use, settlement and compaction, the weather and the season, and how you prepare the ground. Always measure your own plot, check the manufacturer’s coverage figures on the bag or pack, and allow for wastage before ordering materials or sowing.
Treat every result as a starting point, not a guarantee. Soil, compost and aggregate quantities in particular vary with depth, compaction and ground levels, so order a little extra where you can. We round and estimate conservatively, but we cannot account for every soil, product or garden, so verify quantities and measurements against the product data and your own plot before you commit. Always follow product label rates for fertilisers, weedkillers and other treatments.
3. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for:
- indirect, incidental, or consequential loss arising from your use of the site;
- loss of profits, revenue, goodwill, business interruption, or anticipated savings;
- wasted materials, failed plantings, or errors or omissions in calculator output;
- out-of-date citations where product rates or standards have since changed;
- third-party links and their content.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded under English law.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- access the site by automated means (crawlers, scrapers, headless browsers, bulk-download tools or scripts), except a search engine indexing pages for public search results or an assistant fetching a page at a user’s request, in each case within the limits set by our robots.txt;
- extract, copy or re-use all or a substantial part of the site’s content, or repeatedly and systematically extract small parts of it, whether by hand or by machine;
- use any of the site’s content to build, train, fine-tune or evaluate a machine-learning model or dataset, or to build a competing service;
- interfere with, damage or bypass the site’s services or its access controls;
- misrepresent the site’s content as official guidance or as an endorsement of a product;
- use the site for any unlawful purpose.
The Disallow directives and content signals in our robots.txt form part of these terms. Allow directives, and the absence of a directive, are a technical convenience for well-behaved crawlers and grant no licence; the permissions in this section are the only ones we give. Automated access that breaches these terms may be blocked at the network edge without notice.
5. Intellectual property
The site’s text, worked examples, questions and answers, illustrations, icons, page design and code are original works protected by copyright under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and are owned by GardenCalcs or licensed to us. The site as a whole, including its collection of calculators, verified figures, citations and answers, is a database in which we have made a substantial investment in obtaining, verifying and presenting the contents. It is protected by the database right under the Copyright and Rights in Databases Regulations 1997 in addition to copyright.
You may:
- view, save and print pages for your own personal or internal business use, including handing a printed sheet to a customer;
- link to any page from your own site or documents;
- quote short extracts with attribution to GardenCalcs and a link to the page.
You may not, without our written licence:
- republish, redistribute or sell any page or a substantial extract from one;
- extract or re-use all or a substantial part of the database, or repeatedly and systematically extract small parts of it;
- use the content for text and data mining, or to train or fine-tune an AI system. We reserve our rights in the content for these purposes; the exception in section 29A of the 1988 Act covers only non-commercial research. Answering one user’s question from a page fetched at that user’s request, with attribution and a link, is permitted (section 4); bulk or systematic ingestion to build a corpus or index for generated answers is not;
- remove attribution or present the site’s content as your own.
To license our content, including for a commercial product, write to [email protected]. We act on infringement, including by takedown notices to search engines and hosting providers and by legal action where necessary.
