How We Calculate This
Blocks per square metre is the reciprocal of one block's plan area, so a 200×100mm paver (0.02 m²) gives 50/m², a 210×105mm gives ~46/m² and a 240×160mm Tegula 26/m². Total blocks = area × blocks-per-m², rounded up. The wastage multiplier (10% by default) covers the extra cuts a herringbone bond needs at edges and along curves, plus the odd breakage. Whole packs = blocks ÷ blocks-per-pack, rounded up — the UK standard pack is 488 (9.76 m²). Remember to fit edge restraints around the whole perimeter and a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base (100mm for patios, 150mm for drives) under a 30–50mm sharp-sand laying course.

Blocks per m² is the inverse of a single block plan area: 1 ÷ (length_m × width_m). A 200×100mm block covers 0.02 m², giving 50 blocks/m²; 210×105mm gives ~46/m² and 240×160mm Tegula 26/m². We multiply by your area, add the wastage allowance for herringbone cuts, then divide by the blocks-per-pack to get whole packs.
Yes — allow 10% for a 45° herringbone driveway (the most edge cuts) and around 5% for a straight stretcher bond. The 10% default covers cuts, breakages and tonal mixing across packs. Order in full packs and keep spares for future repairs.

Herringbone is strongest for driveways. Stretcher bond (brick pattern) is simplest. Basket weave is decorative. Herringbone requires the most cuts at edges.
Yes, always. Without edge restraints, block paving will spread and shift. Use concrete haunching, metal edging, or mortared kerb stones around the perimeter.
