Creating and Maintaining Lawns in UK Gardens
A healthy lawn is the centrepiece of most British gardens, but getting it established and maintaining it well requires the right quantities of materials applied at the right time. If you are laying a new lawn, our turf roll calculator works out how many rolls you need — standard UK turf rolls measure approximately 1m x 0.4m (0.4 square metres each), though some suppliers offer larger 1m x 1.6m rolls. For seeding, the lawn seed calculator uses recommended rates of 35-50g per square metre for new lawns and 15-25g per square metre for overseeding.
The UK lawn care calendar runs roughly from March to October, with the most important maintenance windows in spring and autumn. Spring is the time for the first feed using our lawn feed calculator, followed by moss treatment using the lawn sand calculator — a traditional mix of iron sulphate, ammonium sulphate, and sharp sand applied at around 135g per square metre. Autumn is the key season for scarification to remove thatch build-up, and our scarification calculator helps estimate the volume of waste you will collect.
For patchy or worn lawns, the overseeding calculator provides the right seed rate, while the top dressing calculator works out quantities of a sandy loam mix to level uneven areas — typically applied at 2-3kg per square metre. The lawn mowing height calculator adjusts recommendations by season and grass type, since most UK lawns contain a mix of perennial ryegrass and fescue that should be kept at 25-40mm during the growing season.
