Odd Shape Area Calculator — Irregular Garden Spaces
Estimate the area of irregularly shaped garden spaces.
Trapezoidal treats each strip between offsets as a trapezium — best for curved borders. Average Width just multiplies the mean offset by length.

How We Calculate This
The offset (trapezoidal) method divides the area into strips. Each strip area = average of two widths x strip length.
The total area is the sum of all strip areas. This method works well for most curved or irregular shapes.
The average width method simply multiplies the mean of all width measurements by the total length.

Lay a straight tape measure along the longest edge. At regular intervals, measure the perpendicular width to the opposite edge. These width measurements are the offsets.
A minimum of 3 offsets is recommended. More offsets (5+) give a more accurate result for very irregular shapes.
The trapezoidal method is very accurate for most garden shapes. For highly irregular areas with sharp angles, consider splitting the space into separate sections.
